The Pego Golf project, in the pipeline for 20 years, has been out to tender for several months but attracted just one bidder
Pego Town Council has been left bemused at a startling lack of interest in an ambitious 18 million euro project to construct a golf course and 1,300 homes in the Alicante town to the north of Denia.
The Pego Golf initiative has been dragging on since the early 2000s. It was approved in 2005, but it was not until 2013 that it came into force, driven by Inversiones Patrimoniales La Marina SL, a company with which the agreement had to be terminated in 2020.
Several months ago, it was revived and put out to tender, with plans to build a golf centre, fairways and public areas in addition to a residential estate on what is currently farmland, some active and some abandoned.
Despite the ambitious nature of the project and the current boom in the real estate sector in the Marina Alta region of Alicante province, only one company has submitted a proposal.
Pego Town Planning councillor, Laura Castellà, said that, "for the moment, we don't know which construction company it is" and will have to wait until March 8 - the end of the deadline - when the envelopes are opened.
What is clear, however, is that if this company complies with all the requirements of the specifications "they will keep the project".
"It is important to remember that the money is not provided by the Pego Town Hall, but by the company that is awarded the contract for the reparcelling and urbanisation of the new sector," she said.
The Pego Golf Integrated Action Plan (PAI) is earmarked for a large area of more than 1.7 million square metres.
And as stated, if the company interested in the contract has everything in order, "everything could get underway in just a few months".
"The first thing will be to urbanise the streets, put in public services, water and electricity, for example; then the golf course and, later and in phases, the different residential complexes," explained the town planner.
In principle, the awarded company has a period of 96 months to carry out all the works, but it can also carry them out in phases as long as it does not exceed 48 months.
For Pego council, this is an opportunity to "unblock a project that many people and businesses are waiting for to get underway."
