ARCHIVED - Alicante cyclist injured after being shot by hunter who mistook him for a rabbit
The victim was shot with dozens of pellets whilst cycling in Alicante's Mount Orgegia forest
A cyclist was injured after being shot at with a pellet gun by a hunter who mistook him for a rabbit whilst riding in Alicante's Mount Orgegia forest on Sunday November 28.
According to police sources, the victim had spotted two hunters in the area when a third, just metres away, fired at least one cartridge loaded with numerous pellets, hitting him in the lower back, arms and hands.
The wounded cyclist immediately called 112 Emergencias and a team from Alicante Local Police's rural unit, along with an ambulance, were sent to the scene.
The hunter, whose permits and documentation were all in order, had been spending the day hunting with his family, and was in an authorised shooting area at the time.
He claimed he had mistaken the cyclist's movement for that of a rabbit and admitted that he shot him with a cartridge containing "a high number of pellets", which police said tallied with the victim's reports of being hit dozens of times.
The local police have sent a report to the National Police and the courts to decide whether the hunter committed a crime of reckless imprudence.
