ARCHIVED - Oceanografic Valencia announces sad death of 60-year-old Beluga Whale Kairo
The majestic mammal has been a beloved fixture at the world-famous aquarium on the Costa Blanca for 20 years

Valencia's Oceanogràfic has announced the sad death of Kairo, its 60-year-old beloved Beluga Whale who arrived at the aquarium from Argentina 20 years ago and has been "an ambassador for the species ever since".
A necropsy will be carried out to establish the mammal's exact cause of death, but according to Oceanogràfic, Kairo has recently been showing symptoms "typical of a specimen of such age".
In a statement shared on Twitter on Tuesday April 26, the aquarium wrote: "We are sad to announce the death this morning of Kairo, our 60-year-old male beluga whale who has lived with us at the Oceanogràfic for 20 years.

"Kairo, Kylu's father, has been part of the Valencia aquarium family for two decades and has enjoyed very good health with the maximum care and quality of life until his last day. The keepers and veterinarians have been attending and treating the animal whenever necessary, and lately, Kairo has been showing some symptoms typical of a specimen of such an advanced age."
"However, despite the enormous effort and affection of all the staff, Kairo has left us."
Oceanogràfic management added that Kairo has "undoubtedly been a great ambassador for his species all over the world" and his passing will be a great loss to visitors as well as staff, in particular the team of keepers "who have been so close to him and shared so much time with him over all these years".
"Kairo's existence has been a gift for the millions of people who have visited the Oceanografic, who have been able to see such an emblematic and majestic species as the beluga whale at close quarters and have been able to learn about the problems this species faces in the Arctic," added the aquarium.
Above all, Kairo's presence has allowed researchers, students, veterinarians and the scientific community from all corners of the world to carry out various research and conservation programmes with this species that would not be possible in the open sea.
