Explosion from electric scooter battery causes devastating fire in Elche
Nine people and two cats were rescued after the fire broke out in the early hours, leaving one firefighter injured and a home severely damaged

At around 2.22am on Friday April 5, the fire broke out on the third floor of an apartment building on Calle Pablo Picasso, just off Calle Pedro Juan Perpiñán. The blaze was sparked when a personal mobility vehicle’s battery exploded, spreading quickly and engulfing the property in flames.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to get the situation under control, with the smoke so dense that nine people and two cats had to be rescued from the third to fifth floors of the building. As a precaution, residents on the first and second floors were evacuated, while the emergency services focused on putting out the flames and preventing the fire from spreading.
The fire was declared under control by 3.09am, but it took until 4.12am to completely extinguish the flames. Sadly, one of the tenants had to receive treatment for smoke inhalation, and a firefighter was injured after falling from the ladder, dislocating his shoulder. Despite the challenges, the response involved a serious operation with two heavy urban fire engines, a ladder truck, and a team of firefighters from Elche and Crevillente.
