Elderly foreign driver plunges onto Torrevieja's seafront rocks
The 79-year-old woman was trapped inside her vehicle, which landed on its side

A 79-year-old foreign woman was rescued early Tuesday morning, April 22, after her car plunged from the seafront promenade in the centre of Torrevieja, landing upside down on the rocky shoreline below.
The incident happened at around 6am when the woman, whose nationality hasn’t been revealed, was driving along the Paseo Juan Aparicio after leaving the car park of a waterfront building. For reasons still under investigation, her vehicle veered off the pedestrian walkway, which is just over half a metre high, and flipped onto its side against a concrete wall separating the promenade from the sea.
Firefighters from the Torrevieja station, along with Local Police and the Guardia Civil, quickly arrived at the scene. Working in the dark, they had to carefully extract the woman, who was trapped inside the vehicle due to the driver's side door being pinned against the ground.
Health services treated her for minor injuries at the scene before transporting her to Torrevieja University Hospital for further evaluation, according to the Emergency Coordination Centre (CICU).
Although traffic on this promenade is limited to residents with parking permits, witnesses reported that the driver may have tried to manoeuvre around a large fixed terrace belonging to a nearby restaurant, possibly resulting in the nasty accident.
Distracted driving is indeed being considered as a factor while the police continue their investigation.
As daylight broke, early morning walkers gathered to watch the recovery efforts, snapping photos of the dramatic scene before the area was cleared by municipal cleanup crews.
