ARCHIVED - Rustlers steal 120 prize birds worth 100,000 euros from Benidorm racing pigeon club
74 of the prized racing pigeons have been recovered by the National Police in the Costa Blanca coastal resort
The National Police have arrested two men accused of stealing 120 racing pigeons valued at 100,000 euros from Benidorm racing pigeon club in two separate robberies in just 10 days.
The rustlers, Spaniards aged 20 and 32, both had criminal records and, according to police, knew exactly which were the most valuable birds to steal.
Plain-clothed and uniformed officers set up a special operation in Benidorm's Juan XXIII neighbourhood and soon spotted the two men walking in the street carrying several boxes containing what turned out to be pigeons stolen from the club hours earlier.
Within two days of the arrests, 74 prized racing pigeons were recovered, and the investigation continues to find the remaining stolen birds.
Meanwhile, the detainees have been placed at the disposal of Alicante Court of Instruction.
Racing pigeons can fetch a considerable sum within the competition bird sport and during February and March, police in Alicante saw reports of thefts soar prompting a province-wide investigation which culminated in the arrest of six people aged 14 to 55 back in June.
