ARCHIVED - Alicante police probe into theft of 40 racing pigeons worth 50,000 euros
Six people have been arrested in connection with the theft of competition birds in Rojales and elsewhere in Alicante province
Racing pigeons can fetch a hefty sum within the field of competition bird sport and during February and March, Alicante Guardia Civil saw reports of thefts soar, prompting a province-wide investigation which has culminated in the arrest of six people aged 14 to 55.
In just two months, 40 racing pigeons worth a combined 50,000 euros were reported missing in Torrevieja, Rojales, Ibi, Algueña, Gaianes and Sax.
Working in collaboration with the Guardia Civil Roca Team in Torrevieja, a unit dedicated to fighting rural robberies, police last month managed to recover 38 of the caged birds "in deplorable health conditions" at a "hidden" location in Alcoy.
The joint operation has resulted in the arrest and investigation into six Spanish people, including two
minors and two women from Rojales, aged between 14 and 55 years old. They have been charged with 10 offences of robbery and one count of theft.
The case is being investigated and handled by Alicante Judicial Authority and the Juvenile Prosecutors' Office.
