ARCHIVED - VIDEO: Plagued Orihuela neighbourhoods overrun with large swarms of mosquitos
Residents in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province, are demanding extensive fumigation to control mosquito populations
As the mosquito season begins in force, residents in Orihuela claim they are already being plagued by swarms of mosquitos and are demanding that the Town Hall does more to control the infestations.
The extent of the problem can be seen in a video recorded by Mari Carmen Gimeno, who lives near the UMH Salesas Campus in the town centre of Orihuela, which shows a large ominous, swirling cloud of mosquitos in the sky.
Swarms of the pests with a nasty bite are more prolific in this particular area which is close to the Segura River that passes through the municipality, and locals have filed official complaints with the local authority calling for extensive fumigation to be carried out immediately.
But it's not just a lack of effective pest control residents are up in arms over. According to Ms Carmen, the area is suffering from "abandonment" in general.
"The trees have not been pruned since before the pandemic, if you look inside the trees are dry and there are many insects. Shops in the area are constantly cleaning to avoid the presence of these insects that persistently sneak in," she said, adding: "I have even had small rats on my terrace, it is already unbearable".
Ms Carmen has filed two complaints with the Town Hall, one in January and a second at the beginning of May, but claims she has "not received a reply nor have they done anything about the problems in the area".
"I know that more residents have also complained but (the council) does not take any notice, and I no longer know what to do. The branches of the nearby trees are already encroaching into my balcony and I'm on the third floor," she added. There has been no official response from Orihuela Town Hall.
