Orihuela Police have closed Camino de Enmedio in the Vega Baja town after an irrigation pipe ruptured

A large sinkhole appeared in Orihuela's Camino de Enmedio on Sunday morning, May 29, after an irrigation pipe burst, forcing Local Police to close the road to traffic whilst emergency repairs are carried out.

Repair work began on the section of road at the junction with the connecting access to Raiguero School on Monday and the stretch has been sectioned off.

"In the meantime, we must keep the accesses closed," said Orihuela Local Police.

Repairs to La Caleta beach promenade in Cabo Roig, Orihuela, finally got underway last week more than two-and-a-half years after a DANA storm in September 2019 caused extensive damage to the coastal strip.

Heavy and persistent rain led to the collapse of parts of the promenade and retaining wall, and opened up a large sinkhole.
