ARCHIVED - Orihuela Costa begins repairing promenade damaged in a storm in 2019
Subsequent landsclides have accentuated problems at La Caleta promenade in Cabo Roig
Repairs of La Caleta beach promenade in Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa, have finally got underway more than two-and-a-half years after a DANA storm in September 2019 caused extensive damage to the coastal strip.
Intense rainall led to the collpase of parts of the structure and retaining wall, and opened up a huge sinkhole down which a woman fell just a month later and needed hospital treatment.
Now, more than 47,000 euros is being ploughed into repairing part of the promenade which runs along the edge of the coastline and making it safe for the public.
On Friday May 20, the reconstruction of a 15-metre section of retaining wall began, a project which will also include fixing the skinhole and replacing the pedestrian walkway in this particular area.
Last March, 18 months after the storm damage, residents living in the area began putting pressure on the council to do something abut the sinkhole, claiming the structure has been deteriorating on a "daily basis".
Orihuela Costa Neighborhood Association in Action (Avoca) sent a letter to both the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councilor for Infrastructure, Ángel Noguera, calling for an "immediate" solution and warning that, if not fixed, "in the event of damage to people as a result of the collapse of the promenade, we will hold the Orihuela Council responsible for it".
More than a year later, the repairs are underway. On Friday, the local authority said: "These works will improve the space that has been affected, and will ensure that citizens can walk along this path that gives access to the beach of Caleta de Cabo Roig, safely."
Despite the isolated damage, the 2.5km Paseo Cabo Roig that also runs along Cala Capitan beach held onto its Blue Tail distinction in the 2022 round of awards by the Association of Environmental Education and Consumer (ADEAC).
