Alicante train station to get major upgrade by spring 2027
The €20.2 million project will increase high-speed capacity and create up to 10 standard-gauge tracks
Work on the major transformation of Alicante railway station is progressing on schedule, with the €20.2 million project expected to be completed by spring 2027.
The scheme, being carried out by a joint venture led by Rover Rail, is designed to significantly increase the station's capacity for long-distance and high-speed trains, allowing more services to operate and opening the way for improved connections.
One of the main elements of the project is the conversion of existing conventional-gauge tracks to standard gauge, which is used by high-speed and long-distance services. Four new standard-gauge tracks will also be built, eventually giving Alicante Terminal up to 10 standard-gauge tracks, six more than it has today.
Work began in July 2025 with earthworks, utility relocation and preparations for the new infrastructure. The current phase includes converting tracks 10, 11 and 12 to standard gauge and renovating the platform between tracks 11 and 12. Once these tracks have been completed and tested, they will gradually enter service, allowing work to begin on tracks 13 and 14 and the wider track layout.
The project has been carefully divided into stages so the station can continue operating throughout the works, with disruption kept to a minimum.
Further work is also taking place in the high-speed section of the station, including the construction of new tracks 9 and 10 and a platform between them. The station concourse is being expanded by around 990 square metres as part of the project.
Alicante currently has connections to three major railway routes, including the high-speed line to Madrid and its connection with Murcia, as well as routes towards Murcia and Valencia. The expansion will give the station considerably greater capacity for high-speed and long-distance services.
Once completed, Alicante Terminal is expected to become one of Spain's largest high-speed rail terminals in terms of capacity, placing it alongside stations in Valencia and Málaga and behind the major terminals in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.
The station upgrade is also part of a much bigger plan to transform Alicante's railway corridor. The next stage will involve changes to the railway approach to the station as part of the Central Park project.
Plans include covering most of the tracks approaching the station with a landscaped slab, creating pedestrian links between neighbourhoods that have historically been divided by the railway. The station's passenger building is also expected to be remodelled, with plans to restore elements of its historic façade facing Avenida de Salamanca.
Both projects depend on the final design of the future Central Park, which is due to be selected through an international ideas competition. Officials are considering launching that process before all the detailed planning for the railway area is complete, allowing the different stages to overlap and potentially speeding up the overall transformation.
