No opening date in sight for 3 Orihuela Costa beach bars
The chiringuitos at Punta Prima, Cala La Mosca and Cala Estaca remain closed as summer fast approaches
Almost a year and a half after all of the 11 beach bars on the Orihuela Costa were forced to close their doors due to a massive contracting mix-up and delay, all but three have reopened well before the summer season kicks into high gear. Sadly, this can’t be said for the chiringuitos on Punta Prima beach, Cala la Mosca or Cala Estaca.
What’s worse, their opening date could still be a long-time coming, as two of the parties who put in bids for the contract to manage the lot are now locked in a legal dispute.
This year, the running of the beach bars in Orihuela Costa, along with the sunbeds and umbrellas, was divided up into separate lots. The unopened facilities correspond to lot 1, which has been awarded to a new management team for four years at a cost of 2.5 million euros. Under the regulations, each owner can only run two lots each.
But there are two problems. Firstly, the company that won the tender, Taberna Garcana, has not yet provided the documentation to formalise the contract. Secondly, and more importantly, the company that won lot 4 and is in second position in lot 2 has lodged an appeal demanding to be reconsidered for these beaches, as it claims that the owner has been awarded three contracts rather than two.
While the dispute drags on, the beach bars remain closed. Originally, Punta Prima should have had all of its facilities up and running by April 1 and Cala Estaca since March 15. The chiringuito at Cala La Mosca was scheduled to open on May 15.
Regarding the rest, Cala Bosque (La Zenia), Cala Capitán, Cabo Roig, La Glea and Barranco Rubio are fully operational since June 1. The forecast is that Aguamarina will open this Wednesday (June 5) and then Cala Cerrada, around the 12th. Mil Palmeras, for its part, is awaiting a permit from Costas.
La Caleta in Cabo Roig was the very first to open for the 2024 season.
