Drunk Brit tries to open plane door on flight to Spain
The intoxicated passenger was arrested as soon as the easyJet plane touched down in Alicante
A 28-year-old British man got so drunk on a flight to Alicante last week that he tried to open the door of the plane mid-air, thinking that the easyJet aircraft had already landed.
According to eyewitnesses, the traveller had been drinking heavily before the flight ever left London Gatwick on Thursday May 28 and once they were airborne, several other passengers had to help the flight attendants to restrain him as his behaviour became more and more disruptive, ultimately “compromising flight safety”.
Cabin crew reportedly continued to serve the man alcohol and he became so intoxicated that he got into a fight with another passenger and even attacked staff when they tried to calm the situation.
As the easyJet flight approached Alicante Airport, the Briton jumped up and tried to open the plane door so he could “get off quicker”. When the door remained sealed shut, he attempted to enter the cockpit, but this was also thwarted by cabin crew.
Spanish police were waiting on the tarmac when the plane eventually landed safety and the man was arrested.
Unfortunately, these incidents are anything but rare and Alicante is one of the top airports in Spain for similar disturbances. In 2023, the Costa Blanca base registered 184 complaints of this nature, behind only Tenerife Airport, with 189.
This latest ruckus comes just days after eight British tourists were arrested in Mallorca for inciting a huge brawl outside a beach bar on Playa Illetas.
Back in 2022, three police officers were injured while trying to restrain a British holidaymaker who attempted to open the aircraft door mid-flight on the way to Lanzarote from the UK.
According to official sources, the man was behaving aggressively throughout the flight, most likely due to alcohol or drugs, and used “excessive force” when two off-duty cops, also going on holiday, tried to prevent him from tampering with the plane door.
