ARCHIVED - British tourist arrested in Lanzarote for trying to open plane door mid-flight
The Brit had to be restrained by off-duty officers who were on their way to Spain on vacation
Three police officers have been injured while trying to restrain a British holidaymaker who attempted to open the aircraft door mid-flight on the way to Lanzarote on Thursday May 26.
According to official sources, the man was behaving aggressively throughout the flight, most likely due to alcohol or drugs, and used “excessive force” when two off-duty cops, also going on holiday, tried to prevent him from tampering with the plane door.
Once the flight landed, more officers boarded the plan to apprehend the disruptive passenger but he resisted arrest, inflicting several injuries on the agents, who have all taken time off to recover.

The Spanish Association of Civil Guards (AEGC) has condemned the attack on its officers, and has called for police to be afforded greater protection when faced with such violence.
AEGC spokesman Jose Cobo said: “A very aggressive person, in that altered state of mind, is very dangerous because he doesn’t feel the blows, however many times you hit him with a baton, but the officers of course feel them.”
The organisation added in a statement: “The British tourist assaulted three police officers at Lanzarote Airport when they tried to remove him from a plane.
“They all had to go to hospital and are now off work.
“Our association feels officers should be given Tasers to deal with situations like the one that occurred on Thursday when the violent attitude of a passenger requires a police presence.
“If one of them had been armed with a Taser, none of them would probably have ended up injured and we would now be talking about a successful operation.”
Neither the traveller nor the airline involved have been named.
