British and German tourists arrested in separate Mallorca brawls
The drunk holidaymakers injured police and bar staff in two violent Balearic Islands bust-ups
The tourist season in Mallorca is off to a riotous start and sadly, holidaymakers from overseas are at the centre of the disturbances, with alcohol playing a major part.
Eight English tourists who had flown to Palma de Mallorca for a stag party were arrested on Wednesday 29 when they started a massive brawl outside a bar on Illetes beach and involved other customers, the wait staff and even police officers.
According to eyewitnesses, the men and women were drinking on the beachside terrace of Balneario Illeta bar at around 7.30pm when a waiter asked them to quieten down a bit – they were reportedly throwing empty beer cans into the sea and disturbing the other patrons and nearby beachgoers.
The response of the group to the staff member’s request, according to official sources, was “extremely violent”. A fight broke out in the middle of the beach involving the tourists and restaurant employees who were trying to calm the situation.
In the heel of the hunt, one waiter received a blow to the head and had to be hospitalised and two Guardia Civil officers, who were off duty but happened to be in the bar at the time, were also injured.
“Rarely has such a violent reaction been seen,” said a spokesperson for the Local Police. The Brits stood up to the officers when they arrived and reportedly tried to run away before being arrested.
Seven people, clients and bathers who were on the beach, have filed a complaint against the arrested men.
“We are not going to allow anyone to come here to put the safety of the municipality at risk and damage our image. We are not going to pass over a single one,” said the deputy mayor responsible for Security, Esperanza Català.
A couple of days earlier, the National Police had to don riot gear to break up a massive fight involving hundreds of drunk German, Dutch and Austrian tourists in the centre of the Arenal de Palma party resort.
At around 6pm on Monday May 27, some 200 German holidaymakers started trashing a bar and were kicked out. A staff member was attacked and the National and Local Police were called.
Despite the heavy police presence, the tourists refused to leave the area, and instead milled around throwing insults and even bottles at the officers. The group eventually scattered after the agents fired a couple of shots into the air, and they are now trying to track down the troublemakers so they can be brought to justice.
