Clock is ticking for Orihuela Costa beach bars to reopen before Easter
At the very least, Orihuela council promises toilets, walkways and lifeguards
With Holy Week just around the corner, the City Council is working hard to give the Orihuela Costa's eleven beaches a much-needed facelift. According to municipal sources, the walkways leading to the sandy areas will begin to be assembled this week, with the wood already stacked on the sand. The council’s goal is to have everything in place in time for the Easter holidays, which are expected to draw large crowds of tourists and locals alike.
But the biggest question on everybody’s mind is whether or not the beach bars, or chiringuitos as they are known in Spanish, will be up and running next month. All of the beach bars in Orihuela Costa have now been closed for 13 months following a decision by the previous government team not to extend the contract. However, new contracts were put out to tender in November, and the council hopes that the chiringuitos will be open in time for Easter.
Whereas up until now one company looked after all of the coast’s chiringuitos, this time the bars themselves, the water sports services and the sun beds and umbrellas will be broken up into five different lots to encourage competitive prices.
The contracts will last for four years, up to and including 2027, and will cost more than 2.5 million euros.
If everything goes according to plan, the process will conclude at the end of the month, barring any unexpected delays or objections.
While the council is optimistic that everything will be in place for Easter, they have also planned for a minimum service for the walkways, lifeguards and toilets, which are in high demand by beachgoers, in case the contracts are not awarded on time.
Given the numerous promises and letdowns since last January, the Cabo Roig and Lomas Neighbourhood Association is understandably sceptical. “Will there be time in three weeks to prepare the logistics?” they asked recently, after requesting that the outdated and dilapidated bathrooms also be replaced.
