ARCHIVED - More free parking in busy Benidorm tourism district
A park and ride for more than 200 vehicles is under construction in Benidorm's Rincón de Loix
A lack of parking in Benidorm's Rincón de Loix district has been an problem for some time and will only be exacerbated when construction of the area's new health centre gets underway.
To alleviate the shortage of adequate spaces for residents and visitors alike, Benidorm Town Hall has reached an agreement with the owners of several plots located on Avenida Almirall Bernat de Sarrià, next to the street market Pueblo, to create a new park and ride car park with capacity for 220 vehicles.
The car park will be located on the grounds of an old mini-golf course that's been abandoned for years at the intersection between avenues Bernat de Sarrià and Derramador, as well as the adjoining land, covering a total area of 7,067m2.
According to Benidorm Mayor, Toni Pérez, the land will be used as a park and ride facility until the development of the Ensanche Levante urbanisation begins, which includes these particular plots.
Work has already begun on the first of the plots, the old golf course, "with a view to opening it as soon as possible". The entire area will be fenced off and public lighting will be installed to avoid shady or poorly lit areas. There will also be surveillance "to prevent illegal dumping of rubble and waste", according to municipal sources.
"The aim is to add new free parking spaces, but also to improve cleanliness and the general the appearance of the Rincón area, a district with important tourist attractions including its market, and several hotels, and in which British tourism dominates," said the mayor.
Benidorm already offers more than 7,000 free parking spaces in 40 park-and-ride lots dotted across the resort, which, according to Perez, "testifies to our commitment to constantly improve mobility and give priority to pedestrians in the town centre".
Back in September, the Town Hall opened a free 100-space car park in the Levante area on a 2,600 m2 plot of land at the end of Calle Jaen, between calles Cuenca and Mallorca. There are now 400 spces available to the public in this hugely popular area alone.
Within the next few weeks, work will begin on the new health centre in Rincon de Loix, and during construction, the free car park in Calle Zamora will be closed. An exact date has not yet been conformed but approval was granted in mid-October and the plan was to begin work within a month.
Since then, two months have passed, although health sources have indicated that everything is "practically ready", and have not ruled out the "possibility of starting before the end of the year".
