ARCHIVED - Long-awaited new Rincon de Loix health centre in Benidorm finally set to become a reality
The Valencia Government has confirmed work on the 4.7M health facility in the Marina Baixa town, Alicante province, will begin in a month
Following mounting pressure for a new outpatient clinic from Satse Nursing Union and frustrated staff at Benidorm's dilapidated Rincón de Loix medical centre, which was left under water after storms this week, the Valencia Government has finally set the ball rolling.
The Valencia Government's Ministry of Health has at last awarded the contract for the construction of a new health centre in the expanding neighbourhood. Work on the 4.7 million euro facility will begin in a month and is expected to take two years to complete.
The health centre will be located on Avenida de Zamora, on a 3,500 m2 plot of land ceded by the Town Hall.
On the ground floor there will be a medical transport area with a permanent base for two ambulances, an emergency area with three consultation rooms, as well as a reception, paediatrics and women's care areas. This floor will also house the extractions and treatment area.
The two upper floors will consist of 19 family medicine and nursing offices together with staff changing rooms, a meeting room, library and pharmacy store.
The long-awaited clinic will replace the current Rincón de Loix health centre on Avenida Juan Fuster Zaragoza, which opened its doors in 1987 and was only ever meant to be a temporary facility until the new outpatient building was constructed.
The authorities pledged that a more suitable facility would be built in Rincón de Loix 35 years ago, but instead patch-up jobs were carried out and conditions have gone from bad to worse. The news will undoubtedly be welcomed by nursing staff at the health centre who have had to watch helplessly as demand on the clinic, which is falling down around them, grows exponentially with hotels, campsites and tourist apartments springing up in the area.
