ARCHIVED - Rincon de Loix health centre in Benidorm left under water after storms
The condition of the ‘provisional’ health centre in Benidorm has been going from bad to worse for 35 years
Nurses in Benidorm are up in arms over the state of the Rincón de Loix health centre, which was only ever meant to be a temporary facility until the promised new outpatient clinic was constructed. Now, it’s in a worse condition than ever. This is despite the fact that the local government has the budget, the land and even detailed project plans for the new buildings.
The straw that broke the camel’s back came last Saturday September 17 when Benidorm was hit by a sudden, torrential downpour that flooded homes, streets and public buildings. One of those affected was the Rincón, which was completely swamped with more than 6 centimetres of water that soaked the corridors and treatment rooms.
Following the debacle, the Satse Nursing Union has accused the Generalitat of caring little about the “inadequate working conditions” tolerated by the staff and paying “poor attention to the population” who use the medical services.
Rincón de Loix health centre opened its doors in 1987 as an auxiliary office, in premises that were provisionally rented with a firm commitment from the local authorities that a more suitable facility would be built in the expanding neighbourhood. Now, healthcare staff watch helplessly as hotels, campsites and tourist apartments spring up, creating more demand on a centre that is falling down around them.
Throughout the last 35 years, the Benidorm City Council has scraped together funds to carry out patch up jobs which included repairing old water leaks, updating the bathrooms and improving accessibility for wheelchair users.
In an effort to appease the nursing staff, the Ministry of Health this Thursday assured that the works on the new facility are “not blocked” but are due to begin within a month.
