Small earthquake recorded in Torrevieja with no damage reported
The magnitude 1.7 tremor was recorded in the Costa Blanca city at an unusually shallow depth
Torrevieja has been hit by another small earthquake, with Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) recording a magnitude 1.7 tremor at an unusually shallow depth.
The earthquake was detected in the Alicante city and reported by the IGN’s Seismology department, which also alerted the Emergency Coordination Centre (CCE) in the Valencian Community.
According to the IGN, the quake had a magnitude of 1.7 and was recorded at a depth of zero kilometres. In practical terms, this means the calculated origin of the tremor was extremely close to the surface.
Despite the shallow depth, a magnitude 1.7 earthquake is very small and would generally only be noticeable close to its epicentre. There have been no reports of damage or injuries.
The latest tremor is another reminder that southern Alicante is an area where small seismic events are not unusual.
Three separate earthquakes were recorded in Alicante province within just 24 hours back in July, although all were below magnitude 2.
One of those was also in Torrevieja, striking at 7.09am on July 14. That earthquake measured 1.8 and was recorded at a depth of around 5 kilometres, with its epicentre close to the Torrevieja salt lagoon southeast of Los Montesinos.
Some residents reported feeling the slight tremor at the time, according to posts shared by Proyecto Mastral Torrevieja on social media, although there were no reports of damage or injuries.
Another earthquake measuring 1.9 was recorded in Elche earlier that day at a depth of 5 kilometres.
Later that evening, the IGN recorded a further magnitude 1.8 earthquake out at sea between Alicante and Benidorm. That tremor was also recorded at a depth of zero kilometres.
