ARCHIVED - Lifeguards return to Villajoyosa beaches on the Costa Blanca
The summer lifeguard service has been reinstated at Villajoyosa's five beaches in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province.
The daily summer lifeguard service has been reinstated at Villajoyosa's five beaches - Playa Centro, Playa Paradís, Varadero, Caleta and Bol Nou.
Fourteen lifeguards (socorristas in Spanish) will work closely with the Local Police, Civil Protection, and 112 emergency personnel to ensure the safety of beach goers.
And they will be joined by 19 beach assistants on June 20.
There will be five lifeguards at Playa Centro, three at Playa Paradís, and two each on the beaches Varadero, Caleta and Bol Nou ahead of the anticipated return of tourists.
From June 21, the municipality's accessible beach service is expected to be reinstated, though for the moment there are few details, only confirmation that four assistants will be on hand to assist elderly beach users and people with reduced mobility or vision.
While the beaches are being prepared for the summer months, cold water has been poured on Noche de San Juan celebrations with confirmation Villajoyosa's 15km coastline will be closed to the public for the second year running on June 23, to prevent traditional beach bonfires.
