ARCHIVED - Daily Covid hospital admissions reach new low on the Costa Blanca
An average of 15 serious Covid patients are admitted to hospitals in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellon on a daily basis.
Measures to contain coronavirus and a progressing vaccination campaign have seen daily hospital admissions in the Valencia region fall by 96 per cent compared to the peak of the pandemic.
According to the Ministry of Health, around 15 serious Covid cases were hospitalised every day over the last week, significantly lower than the average of 423 a day between January 18 and 24.
The region reached a peak of new admissions on January 11, when almost 7,000 people were infected and 537 people with severe symptoms had to be hospitalised.
In contrast, the daily average of new contagions currently stands at 244 people, an improvement which has been attributed to a number of factors: measures such as mask wearing, social distancing and ventilation in enclosed spaces, along with restrictions on mobility and social gatherings, close surveillance to detect and cut virus transmission chains, and the progress in the vaccination process.
"On the one hand, the number of infections is being contained thanks to the effort and responsibility of all, and on other hand, the vaccination strategy, which involves immunising the most vulnerable as soon as possible, is reducing the number of serious cases that inevitably end up in hospital," said Valencia region's Minister of Health, Ana Barceló.
Data also shows a change in the profile of severe Covid patients.
In January, the majority of patients admitted to hospitals across the region were over 75 years-old. Now the majority of admissions are aged 51 to 65, representing 31.4 per cent of all cases, while under 50s account for 30.5 per cent of Covid patients on hospital wards.
