ARCHIVED - Alicante schoolboy drowns after getting his hand stuck in a pool suction drain
The tragic accident happened at Alicante's Bulevar Cantalar Residence in Cabo de las Huertas

A young schoolboy believed to be seven-years-old has drowned after getting his hand stuck in a suction drain at the bottom of a swimming pool on an urbanisation in Cabo de las Huertas, Alicante.
The child had been swimming with two other youngsters at the Bulevar Cantalar Residence during the lifeguard's break when tragedy struck at around 2.45pm on Wednesday June 15.
The alarm was immediately raised and two local police officers were the first on the scene. They dived into the pool but were unable to free the little boy until the electricity supply was cut off immobilising the suction system, according to police sources.
After getting the unconcious child out of the pool, an off-duty doctor who lives on the urbanisation tried to revive the unconscious child before a SAMU medical team arrived and took over with the support of three other police patrols, two firefighters with a defibrillator, another ambulance crew and National Police officers.
Sadly, resuscitation attempts were unsuccesful and the boy was declared dead at the scene.
Alicante Judicial Police Brigade detectives then arrived to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child's drowning.
During the initial inquiries, a short distance from the drain where the child's hand got caught investigators discovered a loose protective grating.
These gratings are normally bolted in place, so police are now looking into why it wasn't and have carried out checks on the condition of the drain itself.
Earlier this week, an 82-year-old man drowned at Poniente beach in Benidorm, and last month a pensioner lost his life after getting into difficulty at Playa del Cura beach in Torrevieja. Thankfully, paramedics were able to save a 19-month-old British toddler who fell into a private pool in the village of Aigues near Benidorm.
