ARCHIVED - Another beach tragedy as 82-year-old man drowns in Benidorm
The elderly victim was pulled unconscious from the water at Poniente beach in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province
Tragedy has struck at another beach in Alicante province after an 82-year-old man drowned at Playa de Poniente in Benidorm.
Last month, a pensioner lost his life after getting into difficulty at Playa del Cura beach in Torrevieja, and paramedics were unable to resuscitate a 19-month-old British toddler who fell into a private pool in the village of Aigues near Benidorm.
The latest incident happened on Friday afternoon, June 10, when the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) received a call for assistance after a man, 82, was pulled unconscious from the sea at Poniente beach.
Lifeguards carried out basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques on the elderly bather before ambulance crews took over.
However, despite performing advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other recovery techniques, paramedics were unable to revive the man and he was declared dead at the scene. A post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of his death.
In other incidents over the weekend, a team from Alicante Firefighters' Consortium rescued a 58-year-old woman who fell unconscious due to heatstroke whilst hiking Alicante's Ruta del Pantano de Relleu just after midday on Sunday June 12.
And on Saturday June 12, at around 5pm, firefighters armed with a stretcher managed to pull an injured woman to safety after she became trapped in a rocky area near Punta del Raset beach, also known as Cagarritar, in Denia.
