ARCHIVED - Alicante wildfire sparked by firecrackers finally brought under control
Homes were at risk as flames tore through a mountainside forest in Alcalalí in the Marina Alta region of Alicante province
A forest fire which threatened to spread to nearby homes in Alcalalí on Wednesday evening, February 23, is believed to have been sparked by "firecrackers being thrown in the area".
The wildfire broke out on the Ermita del Calvari mountain at around 8.20pm, dangerously close to a number of rural properties, and was finally brought under control on Thursday morning.

The flames were fuelled by winds and quickly gained momentum, visible from quite a distance, according to Alicante Firefighters' Consortium, prompting the Valencian Government's Emergency Coordination Centre to decree Situation 1 of the Special Plan for Forest Fires with Potential Severity "due to the proximity to non-forest assets".
Teams from Denia and Benissa fire stations, together with provincial forest firefighters, managed to create a perimeter around the fire to contain it and prevent considerable damage to nearby homes and the mountainside pine tree forest.
Several witnesses reported seeing a group of people throwing firecrackers shortly before the blaze, and a full investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out.
As yet, it's not clear exactly how much of the forest area has been destroyed.
