Alicante-Elche airport registers record-breaking passenger numbers
The Costa Blanca airport has recorded more travellers so far this year than in all of 2023
Alicante airport continues to soar to new heights, breaking records month after month. This autumn is no exception and with two months of the year left, the Costa Blanca aerodrome has already registered more passengers than in the whole of 2023.
Aena, Spain’s airport management company, has just released the latest figures, which show that 1,797,457 travellers passed through the Alicante terminal this October alone, 13.3% more than in the same month of 2023.
The yearly stats are even more impressive: since January, Alicante airport has welcomed a whopping 15,891,921 passengers, an impressive 16.5% increase on last year.
As usual, international passengers lead the way, accounting for 87% of the total number of travellers in October, with the UK (594,284 passengers), the Netherlands (114,560), Germany (108,688), Belgium (89,848) and Norway (81,769) being the top five countries of origin.
The airport also saw a record number of flights in October, with 11,243 operations, a 13.1% increase from the same month in 2023.
Alicante-Elche Airport has been on a remarkable trajectory, with a steady increase in passenger numbers and flights over the past few years. The airport's impressive growth has been marked by several milestones.
In 2022, the airport surpassed the 13 million passenger mark, and in 2023, it reached a record 15.7 million passengers. This year, the airport is expected to break the 16 million passenger mark, solidifying its position as one of the busiest airports in Spain.
To accommodate these huge numbers, the Costa Blanca base is undergoing a major upgrade. The first phase of the project, the construction of a new taxiway for the aircraft, got underway last month. According to Aena, this addition will reduce wait times both during take-offs and landings as it affords the plane much more space.
The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, has also announced plans to invest 600 million euros in the extension of the current terminal.
