ARCHIVED - Windstorm whips up white foam fest along Torrevieja salt lagoon shoreline
Alicante province has been hit by strong gusts of wind this week, caused by the arrival of storm Gerard

Footage of uprooted trees, cars crushed by fallen branches and torn down power lines are commonplace in the wake of destructive powerful winds. But images of a more peculiar nature are intriguing locals in Torrevieja where wind storms have whipped up a coastal 'phenomenon'.
The province has experienced particularly strong winds this week, thanks to the arrival of Storm Gerard, and while there have been no reports of personal injury or serious material damage, the fierce gusts have agitated the waters at Torrevieja salt lagoon and generated a somewhat eerie-looking salt foam.
Footage of the giant bubble fest was taken by Joaquín Carrión and shared by the Proyecto Mastral Torrevieja platform on Thursday January 19.
According to experts, the salt foam spectacle occurs when the water is churned by the force of the wind. Air is trapped in the water, forming persistent bubbles that stick to each other through surface tension.
Although the foam is generally non-toxic, swimming in waters with thick sea foam can be dangerous. Inhaling sea foam can cause choking and makes breathing very difficult. In some instances, storms can create layers of sea foam that are well over a foot thick.
