ARCHIVED - Half a million to be spent on measures to prevent flooding of the N-332 Torrevieja and nearby housing estate
The Doña Inés housing development in Torrevieja is located in a flood-prone zone

Torrevieja water company, Aguas del Arco Mediterráneo (AGAMED) plans to invest more than half-a-million euros on a project that will reduce flooding in the town's Doña Inés residential area.
The new infrastructure will consist of a 14,000 m3 flood pool that will prevent the temporary closure of the N-332 road and flooding issues on the housing development during torrential rains. This will be done by enlarging the area's existing rainwater storage basin to maximise its storage capacity.
This lamination basin receives water from the Los Mercados site and from the drainage ditch on the east side of the N-332. The floodable park will have a projected surface area of 4,533 m2 and a depth of 3.2 metres.
AGAMED manager, Jorge Ballesta, told a group of Doña Inés residents who attended a meeting to discuss the plans that work on the 524,000 euro project will be carried out over the next six months.
"It will ultimately prevent traffic from being cut off at the access and exit to and from the houses in the urbanisation, as well as from the N-332 during torrential rains.
"Given the limited 2,000 m3 of storage capacity of the current reservoir, even in low intensity rainfall the reservoir fills up and overflows, causing serious flooding. This is a problem that we intend to solve with this project," he added.
More details about the anti-flood scheme can be found on AGAMED's YouTube channel or the following video: https://youtu.be/6D9U6Ntn0q8.
