ARCHIVED - Storm Gerard brings cold mass and strong winds: Alicante weather Jan 17-20
A "very cold" polar mass will see daytime temperatures plummet to 10ºC in parts of Alicante province

Winter appears to have arrived in Alicante with the onset of the first intense cold spell thanks to the first real storm. Storm Gerard has prompted several weather warnings in parts of southern Spain and Alicante province is no exception with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) placing the province on orange alert for strong winds and a sharp drop in temperatures.
Gusts of up to 90kmh will make their presence felt over the coming days, although on the plus side it will remain dry with only a slight chance of scattered showers.
Following an overcast start, intervals of cloud are forecast on Tuesday January 17 although it will remain bright and dry. However, thanks to Storm Gerard, driving winds of between 70 and 90 km/h are forecast with intervals of "strong and very intensity", particularly in the north of the province.
Alcoy: 6ºC to 15ºC
Alicante: 10ºC to 21ºC
Denia: 8ºC to 21ºC
Elche: 10ºC to 20ºC
Orihuela: 10ºC to 20ºC
The weather alert remains in place on Wednesday January 18, which will dawn with fairly cloudy skies and frost inland. Temperatures in general and locally will plummet, topping out at 10ºC in the likes of Alcoy where the mercury will fall to a chilly 3ºC overnight. Westerly and northwesterly winds will be occasionally strong until mid-afternoon when inland areas can expect very strong gusts.
Alcoy: 3ºC to 10ºC
Alicante: 7ºC to 16ºC
Denia: 6ºC to 16ºC
Elche: 7ºC to 14ºC
Orihuela: 6ºC to 13ºC
Driving winds will continue into Thursday January 19, prolonging the weather alert, but are expected to diminish slightly by late evening. The skies will be partly cloudy or clear but thermometers will remain on a downward trajectory at night, and are not expected to improve during the day. Aemet has forecast possible weak and scattered precipitation in the north and frost inland.
Alcoy: 2ºC to 11ºC
Alicante: 6ºC to 16ºC
Denia: 5ºC to 16ºC
Elche: 5ºC to 15ºC
Orihuela: 5ºC to 14ºC
The mercury will take a turn on Friday January 20 as we head into the weekend with temperatures reaching 21ºC in Alicante city and around 19ºC in other coastal areas. The clouds refuse to budge but most of the province can expect intervals as opposed to overcast skies for the most part. And the winds will lose much of their intensity, dropping to light to moderate; east and northeasterly on the coast and variable inland.
Alcoy: 6ºC to 15ºC
Alicante: 10ºC to 21ºC
Denia: 8ºC to 19ºC
Elche: 8ºC to 20ºC
Orihuela: 7ºC to 19ºC
