ARCHIVED - Villajoyosa seeks funding to improve beach access with the installation of a lift
50-year-old steps currently connect the town centre with the coastal area and homes in the Marina Baixa town, Alicante province

For five decades, Villajoyosa town centre has been connected to its coastal area and nearby homes via a steep stairway which has now seen better days, prompting the Town Hall to look for alternative means of access.
The local authority wants to construct a lift to improve accessibility and is now seeking funding.
Villajoyosa's Department of Other Infrastructures has requested the drafting of a technical report to provide the public space between the extension of Calle Ibiza and the promenade at the height of Avenida del Puerto with an elevator to connect both areas of the municipality, "overcoming the difficulties presented by the orography of the terrain and improving accessibility to the beach centre".
The coastal area, promenade, Avenida del Puerto and a line of residential buildings on the seafront are currently connected to the rest of the town centre by the aforementioned stairway which opens up a steep slope and "disintegrating terrain", explained the Town Hall in a statement.
"This new project proposes the regeneration of this urban space by merging and adapting two plots of land owned by the municipality in the Palasiet area in order to make the public space safer and more accessible," it added.
The proposal also includes the installation of accessible public toilets at promenade level.
Villajoyosa Town Hall plans to rally financial support from 'supra-municipal bodies' such as the Valencia Government or via European funding lines.
