Video: Wildfire sweeps through Orihuela Costa golf course
The fire broke out between the Campoamor and Las Ramblas golf courses
Panic has swept across Alicante’s Orihuela Costa as videos flood social media of an out of control wildfire consuming the brush land. Shortly before 6pm on Thursday June 20, locals reported seeing plumes of black smoke and hearing what sounded like an explosion.
The source of the blow-up appears to have come from close to the Tajo-Segura water transfer canal, between the Las Ramblas Golf and Campoamor areas.
Due to the gusts of wind, the flames wafted precariously close to hundreds of homes nearby.
Furthermore, the path of the blaze was located in the Protected Landscape of Sierra Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor.
A esta hora se mantienen varias dotaciones de bomberos tratando de apagar un incendio de vegetación que comenzaba esta tarde en #Orihuela Costa, muy cerca de las Ramblas Golf. It was a long night for the 40 firefighters and 15 members of the Local Police, Guardia Civil and Civil Protection but finally, at around 1am on Friday morning, the blaze was brought under control after burning through 10 hectares of pine forest.
Miraculously, nobody had to be evacuated and no injuries or property damage have been reported.
The fire mainly affected areas of scrubland on one side of the road that runs parallel to the canal, between the Campoamor and Las Ramblas golf courses.
The terrain where the fire developed is rugged, with lots of hills and valleys, and the easterly wind, which blew continuously on Thursday afternoon, didn’t help matters. Fortunately, firefighters were able to refill their water tanks rapidly thanks to the nearby canal and the La Pedrera reservoir.
