VIDEO: Man armed with axe arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at Alicante petrol station
The agitated 29-year-old allegedly threw the axe at an Alicante National Police before being detained
A 29-year-old Spanish man has been arrested following a terrifying incident at a petrol station in Alicante during which the agitated suspect launched the weapon at an officer who had to throw himself to the ground to avoid "being hit squarely".
Shortly after 8pm on Sunday April 3, a member of staff at the garage on Avenida Pintor Gastón Castelló called the National Police reporting that a man armed with an axe, with what turned out to have a 15-centimetre blade, had entered the petrol station and was behaving very aggressively.
Around a dozen plain clothed and uniformed police officers were immediately sent to the scene and tried unsuccessfully to calm down the "upset man" before he threw the weapon at one of the officers.
A video recorded by a resident in the area shows the young man (pictured to the right of the photograph) agitated and raising his arms with an axe in one hand before hurling it at one of the officers.
He was eventually restrained and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The National Police is still investigating the case and whether or not the detainee suffers from any illness or condition that may explain his actions before the case it put before the courts.
