On the run for more than two years and wanted for drug trafficking and murder, a New Zealand fugitive belonging to the Hells Angels criminal biker gang has been tracked down and arrested in Madrid.
Known for travelling under false identities in France and Slovakia, the dangerous fugitive was convicted of putting a hit out on a rival gang member in the US for a fee of 20,000 dollars. He also stands accused of having trafficked half a tonne of cocaine into New Zealand.
A few weeks ago, National Police officers got a tip off that the man was hiding out with other bikers in the Spanish capital, members of what’s known as Los Ángeles del Infierno MC in Spain.
A surveillance operation was launched and police got their break when they heard about a massive biker party planned by the Madrid chapter. Officers spotted their man entering the club headquarters and they monitored the premises while he remained inside for around eight hours.
He finally left in a minivan with six other members; the vehicle was intercepted and the fugitive was arrested at an exit of the A2 motorway.
At the time of his arrest, the fugitive was carrying forged documents with his photograph and two different identities (a French identity card and passport and a Slovak identity card and driving licence). The arrested man is currently in prison awaiting extradition to the United States to serve his sentence.
The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club (MC) is an organisation present in at least 62 countries and with around 5,000 members, but is illegal in neighbouring countries such as Germany and the Netherlands. It was established in Spain in 1997.
The expansion in Spain has been very gradual but the chapters are notorious for springing up in areas with high levels of organised crime, such as the Costa del Sol, the entire Costa Levantina, the Costa Brava, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.
Each chapter has a headquarters and a very rigid hierarchical organisation. On mainland Spain, the Hells Angels maintain leadership over the rest of the biker gangs.
At the end of 2023, six members of the Canary Islands branch were arrested in Tenerife for crimes of serious threats and coercion, criminal damages and belonging to a criminal organisation.
Just a month before these high-profile arrests, the extradition of a leader of the Hells Angels Ibiza chapter back to Germany was delayed after he became violent and unmanageable on the flight.
