Try your hand at traditional basket weaving with free weekly workshops
There are free esparto grass weaving courses in the Huerto Don Jorge in Águilas
The Association of Friends of Esparto Grass in Águilas, in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the Town Council of Águilas, is running Esparto grass weaving workshops to teach people the traditional local art and trade of weaving using Esparto grass.
In the past, weaving with Esparto grass was the main trade in Águilas and a pillar of the local economy for centuries. There is even a museum dedicated to it in the town.
Nowadays, a volunteer association keeps this folk tradition alive. They hold practical workshops every Friday afternoon in the Huerto Don Jorge cultural centre in Águilas.
The workshops, taught by artisans from the association, are completely free and anyone can turn up and join in until full capacity is reached.
