Summer lifeguard service begins on Alicante and Calpe beaches
The service will run from June 1 to September 15 on the Costa Blanca municipalities' combined 12 stretches of coastline
Despite the heavy downpours and thunderstorms of late, Alicante city and Calpe are beach-ready ahead of the high season having initiated the summer lifeguard service on their combined 12 beaches.
The daily rescue and first aid service will run from Thursday June 1 to September 15, although times differ between the two popular coastal destinations.
In Alicante, in addition to the lifeguard service from 10am to 8pm, seven days a week, Alicante City&Beach Tourist Board has installed walkways, footbaths and toilet services, and reinforced Local Police patrols at Postiguet, Albufereta-Almadraba, Urbanova, San Juan and Tabarca beaches.
Two rescue boats will cover the coastal strip between Urbanova and Playa de San Juan.
And at the latter beach, a pair of improved Miami-style lifeguard booths, set to become a 'tourist icon', according to the city council, have been installed, along with a renovated sports area equipped with a multitude of modern new equipment.
In Calpe, a lifeguard service has been in place since Easter Week, although only on weekends. Now, the rescue assistance is available daily throughout June and September from 11am to 7pm, extended to 10am to 8pm during July and August.
In high season the service covers the beaches of Calalga, Fossa, Racó, Cantal Roig, Morelló, Arenal-Bol and Puerto Blanco.
An ambulance will be located at Cantal-Roig, an intermediate point between the two largest beaches in the town.
The service will be staffed by 18 people during mid-season and up to 32 in high season. All lifeguard posts will have a defibrillator and oxygenation equipment.
In addition to rescue boats located at Fossa and Arenal-Bol, the coastline will be patrolled by a jet ski with a floating stretcher, a VIR (rapid intervention vehicle) coordination vehicle equipped with defibrillator and oxygen equipment, two kayaks located in Racó and Cantal, and bicycles to move quickly along the promenade.
The beaches of Arenal-Bol, La Fossa, Puerto Blanco and Cantal Roig and the coves of Calalga and Racó have toilets, and sandy stretches also have footbaths and walkways.
