ARCHIVED - Alicante beach to get a Miami makeover
Lifeguard huts at Alicante's San Juan beach have been transformed into colourful tourist attractions
Two bright and colourful Miami-inspired lifeguard posts will soon grace the sands of San Juan beach in Alicante with plans to add a vibrant touch to the rest of the city's beaches over the next few years.
Designed by local artist Antonyo Marest, following a 100,000-euro investment by Alicante Tourist Board, the aim is to transform the once dreary lifeguard stations into "tourist icons" and will be up and running this summer.
"We wanted to improve the lifeguard infrastructures, but at the same time create a unique image," explained head of the tourist board, Elena Lumbreras.
"Marest's work is increasingly recognised around the world and his colourful, cheerful and optimistic art fits in perfectly with San Juan beach. The design is reminiscent of the iconic lifeguard posts on Miami beaches and that's what we want for Alicante, differentiating and identifiable elements that become an additional tourist attraction."
As well as being bold and bright, the new posts are also larger, offer more shade for lifeguards and improved visibility.
The artist himself said he was thrilled to be involved in the project.
"It's great to be able to do something big here which will be recognisable worldwide. Alicante's beaches are among the best in the world, so why shouldn't they have an iconic element like the beaches in Miami that people can photograph and share on a global level, boosting tourism?" said Marest.
The first two lifeguard huts, treated to withstand the coastal elements, will be located at entrances 4 (Calle El Palmeral) and 16 (Avenida de Bruselas) and will gradually be extended to the rest of Alicante coastline to create a uniformed image.
Marest was born in Villena, Alicante, and has exhibited work around the world. Last year he left his mark in Miami, transforming a 24-metre tower into a work of art.
