Subsidised spa breaks in the Valencia Region for the over 65s
The Valencia government has launched its 'Thermalism 2023' programme with 8,259 spa vacations subsidised by up to 220 euros each
The benefits of bathing in thermal waters are well documented and spa visits are widely considered to be one of the best ways to rest, relax and even heal.
The therapeutic use of mineral-medicinal waters is an age-old practice into which complementary techniques from different fields of medicine have been incorporated.
In recent years, the Valencia government has launched its 'Termalismo Valenciano' programme of thermal spa breaks aimed at the over 65s, designed to promote active ageing, improve health and prevent dependency.
The initiative offers the more mature population the opportunity to access spas at affordable prices by providing specific thermal therapies for certain age-related pathologies. "It also serves as an unbeatable opportunity to relax and socialise," assures the regional authority.
"Another objective is to promote the active participation of the elderly in society, to promote tourist areas and to foster economic development and employment in the Valencia Region."
Four spas offering a 'healing experience' are participating in the scheme, with a total of 8,259 places subsidised by up to 220 euros each at 'thermal complexes' from Requena to Vilavella.
Further information, criteria and application details can be found on the GVA Termalismo webpage.
Galicia, Aragon and Castile-La Mancha are three of the regions with the most spas in Spain, although the Valencia Region is not far behind with four spas in Cofrentes, Requena, Montanejos and La Vilavella. But what makes them so special?
Cofrentes
The Hotel Balneario Hervideros de Cofrentes in Valencia is the only medical centre in Spain that has designed a healthy ageing programme combining diagnosis, treatment and education.
For more than 30 years, its team has specialised in chronic back and knee pain, but more in its prevention than cure. With a wide range of prices, diagnosis and manual therapy from 70 euros.
Balneario de Requena
The Hotel Balneario del Cabriel in Requena, also in Valencia, is located in the natural park of the Hoces del Cabriel, which makes it a perfect place to relax. Its waters are sulphurous-calcic and hydrogen sulphide, which produces its characteristic smell and colour. A thermal voucher is available from 30 euros while the 'health' programme costs 95 euros per person per night.
Montanejos Spa
This is a spa with thermal water treatments, health, social thermalism and Nordic walking, located in the town of Montanejos, Castellón. Its facilities have mineral-medicinal water "brought directly from the Fuente de los Baños", according to the website. Prices vary, but the 'mesotherapy' voucher costs 160 euros.
Balneario de la Vilavella
Opened in 1850, this is a unique place in the town of Villavieja, Castellón. It has medicinal mineral water at 38ºC, ideal for people with rheumatism and arthrosis and a hotel in the same building. As for its prices, its 5-spa circuits voucher costs 112.50 euros.
The spa programme will run until November 30 2023, in periods of eight days (seven nights), in both high and low seasons (subsidy is reduced to 139.15 euros).
The package will include: accommodation in a double room, full board, thermal treatments appropriate to the needs of each of the beneficiaries for six days and socio-cultural entertainment activities.
