ARCHIVED - Several Alicante restaurants make the prestigious Repsol Guide for the first time
A total of 10 eateries in the Valencia Region scooped Guía Repsol 2023 'sun' awards

Four restaurants in Alicante province have received distinguished Repsol Guide 2023 'Sol' awards in recognition of their culinary prowess during a special ceremony at Alicante Provincial Council Auditorium (ADDA) on Monday.
Espacio Montoro in Alicante, Casa Bernardi in Benissa, Lula by Aurora Torres in Los Montesinos and Hogar del Pescador in Villajoyosa achieved their very first 'sun' awards and entry to the guide.
Together with six other restaurants in the city of Valencia (Fierro, Fraula, Nozomi Sushi Bar, Smasha, Señuelo and Tavella), they make up 10 new establishments in the Valencia Region to join this elite list with 100 new names across the country this year.
Espacio Montoro, located on Avenida de la Albufereta in Alicante city, was one of the most talked-about restaurants to obtain its first Sol Repsol, having won the award for 'best new restaurant' at the Valencia Community Gastronomy Awards. After working with others, chef Pablo Montoro (pictured above) opened his own restaurant in Alicante in August 2019, and his proposal at Espacio Montoro is based on natural, artisan, Mediterranean cuisine, "but without renouncing world flavours".

El Hogar del Pescador, recommended by the Repsol Guide in 2020, is a 50-year-old restaurant founded initially for the enjoyment of seafarers, hence its name, and run by the Devesa Santacreu family in Villajoyosa since 1970.

At the head of the restaurant is the daughter of the founders, chef Marta Devesa, who has been at the helm for the last decade. The dishes on the menu "are characterised by their raw materials...in addition to their wide variety of rice dishes, they also offer fish and seafood bought daily from the local fish market, according to the guide.
Finally, Lula by Aurora Torres is another hidden gem in the Vega Baja region of the province, located in a separate space within the restaurant La Herradura (Solete Repsol Guide), a 19th century country house in Los Montesinos.

With these new additions, Alicante province now boasts 28 Repsol 'Soles', of which three restaurants have three 'suns' (Quique Dacosta in Denia, BonAmb in Javea and L'Escaleta in Cocentaina), seven have two 'suns' (Beat in Calpe, La Finca in Elche, Monastrell in Alicante, Tula in Javea, Casa Pepa in Ondara, Nou Manolín in Alicante, Peix i Brases in Denia) and 18 have one 'sun'.
