ARCHIVED - Feb 25-27 Alicante hosts biggest Repsol Guide gastronomy festival
The festival in Alicante city is a preamble to the awarding of the prestigious culinary Repsol Guide Suns 2023

Alicante city is preparing to host the biggest Repsol Guide gastronomic festival next week, a three-day culinary extravaganza culminating in the eagerly-awaited awarding of the sought after Soles Guía Repsol 2023 for the best restaurants and chefs.
One of the highlights of the weekend, from February 25 to 27, will be the 'showcooking' of a giant paella in the Town Hall Square, but there is much more for visitors to sink their teeth into.
"This will be a weekend where the protagonists will be the people of Alicante and visitors who will be able to experience and enjoy first-hand the gastronomic talent of Spanish cuisine," promised the head of the Alicante City&Beach Tourist Board, Mari Carmen Sánchez.
Saturday February 25, 10.30am to 2pm: Alicante's Central Market will host a showcooking event. Four Sol-winning restaurants from Alicante will prepare a variety of dishes for tasting: Nou Manolín (2 Soles Repsol Guide), El Portal (1 Sol Repsol Guide), Estiu (Solete Repsol Guide) and Moments (Solete Repsol Guide). "Guía Repsol wants to highlight and vindicate the role of markets in people's daily lives," said guide director María Ritter.
Sunday February 26: A traditional rice dish will be prepared for 1,500 people in Town Hall Square. Alicante chef Moncho Riquelme and his team, specialists in rice dishes, will be in charge of preparing this dish based on chicken, rabbit and vegetables.
Monday February 27: Soles Gala at the Auditorium of the Provincial Council of Alicante (ADDA).
In addition, 20 extras will be handing out 40-centimetre helium balloons to children throughout Saturday and Sunday, as well as wooden spoons and 'paellero marinera' envelopes for preparing rice, a nod to Alicante's gastronomy.
And from now until Tuesday February 28, a three-metre high 'ninot', made by an Alicante craftsman in fibreglass, representing the Sol Guía Repsol award, will be on the Explanada de España.
Alicante Mayor, Luis Barcala, has encouraged "all Alicante residents and visitors to join in this celebration of the best gastronomy in Spain".
"We want them to feel proud of the fact that Alicante is going to become the capital of haute cuisine by hosting the Repsol Suns award gala, an activity they can take part in."
Meanwhile, the regional secretary of Turisme Comunitat Valenciana, Francesc Colomer, is confident the festival will become a regular fixture.
"This is not just a one-off event, which is already important in itself, but also opens up a series of opportunities for many people. The awarding of the Repsol Guide Suns is not just a gala, it recognises great culinary professionals and benefits the tourism sector and gastronomy."
