ARCHIVED - Three Murcia restaurants awarded prestigious Respol Guide sun distinction
The Region of Murcia now has 20 restaurants that boast this gastronomic recognition

Often referred to as 'Europe's Orchard', the Region of Murcia is renowned for its rich and varied vegetables and pulses along with its celebrated cuisine. The region is already home to 17 restaurants awarded distinctive 'Soles' (sun awards) presented by the prestigious Guía Repsol 2023 (Repsol Guide).
And this week, another three eateries have been added to the elite list of 200 'Soles' holders across the country.
On Monday February 27, the lucky recipients were announced in recognition of their growth in recent years and their high culinary standards during a special ceremony at Alicante Provincial Council Auditorium (ADDA).
Suns were awarded to new guide entries: Frases in Murcia city; El Mosqui in Cabo de Palos, Cartagena; and Borrego in Bullas.
Frases is one of the restaurants in the capital that is earning an enviable position among the gastronomic establishments of reference, according to Repsol. Marco Antonio Iniesta and María Egea are the owners of the small but charming establishment and are responsible for a "casual" cuisine, that is "fresh and based on taste memory". Presentation of dishes and table service were also highlighted by the judges.
Cabo de Palos is a gastronomic reference point in the Region of Murcia and home to El Mosqui restaurant. The young chef Sergio de la Orden, who won the award for Spain's best new chef at Madrid Fusión, is the 'captain' of an eaterie "created to enjoy, above all, the fish and stew of the Mar Menor".
"Exquisite treatment and a demanding care for the product", together with "the valuable hands of one of the most promising chefs in the Region", earned El Mosqui the award.
Restaurante Borrego, in Bullas, will bow fly the flag for "class and elegance of the most exclusive flavours" in the northwest of the Region, as a latest Repsol Guide addition. "The typical products of the land play a special role in the menu of chef Salva Fernández", who also has a 'rogue' version of his restaurant aimed at a younger audience at another restaurant.
The Region of Murcia now has 20 restaurants with the guide's prized 'Sol' award: Cabaña Buenavista with three; Odiseo, El Olivar and Magoga with two; and Alborada, El Sordo, Malvasía, El Albero, De Loreto, Venezuela, El Churra, AlmaMater, Palacete de La Seda, Local de Ensayo, Morales, Taúlla, Makoto, Frases, El Mosqui and Borrego with one each.
