ARCHIVED - Rogue electrician held over theft of 1.8 tons of copper cable from urbanisations in Alicante
The suspect used a trade utilities key to allegedly carry out more than 50 thefts in Alicante neighbourhoods
Police in Alicante have arrested a former electrician and a woman in connection with the theft of 1.8 tons of copper from 51 different homes and residents' associations on urbanisations in Alicante.
The rogue electrician allegedly used a trade utilities key to gain access to properties and dressed in his former work clothes so as not to arouse suspicion, entering homes in Alicante, Mutxamel, San Vicente del Raspeig and El Campello and causing more than 40,000 worth of damage.
According to police sources, the arrested man had more than 30 years of extensive experience as an electrical installer "which allowed him to manipulate electrical installations without risk".
His knowledge also allowed him to detect homes that were not inhabited by studying the electricity consumption.
Once he had cut cables from meters to the targeted properties, he removed the wiring before selling the copper to scrap merchants, "always in small quantities" so as not to drawn attention to himself, with the help of the arrested woman.
A police probe was launched following dozens of complaints and fingerprints obtained together with security camera footage led officers to identify the suspect who was arrested after being stopped in his along with the alleged accomplice.
Inside the vehicle, police discovered a large quantity of stripped copper cable ready for sale and multiple tools. A subsequent house search unearthed more copper and the pair were charged with 51 thefts worth more than 10,000 euros.
