ARCHIVED - Driver clocked speeding through Alicante village at 169 kph
The motorist was travelling at almost three times the speed limit when he was stopped in Hondón de Las Nieves, Alicante
A speeding motorist was caught hurtling through an Alicante village at almost three times the speed limit, clocking up 169 kph.
The Guardia Civil's Traffic Department was carrying out routine surveillance on the CV-845 in Hondón de las Nieves between Aspe, near Elche and the Murcian border, when the driver of a black Seat aproached kilometre 1.600 well above the 60kph speed limit.
Officers stopped the vehicle and having identified driver, reported him for an offence against road safety under article 379.1 of the Penal Code for exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 kilometres per hour on an interurban road.
The driver faces a prison sentence of between three and six months, a fine or up to 90 days community service. In addition, he could lose his driving licence for up to four years.
The Guardia Civil has issued a reminder that compliance with speed limits, "as well as being an obligation", reduces the severity of possible injuries in the event of an accident and considerably increases reaction time.
"This makes it easier for drivers to make decisions in the event of any unforeseen incident on the road, thereby avoiding a greater number of accidents."
