ARCHIVED - President of Valencia region confirms that perimetral closure will be lifted on May 9
The regional president has also stated that the current curfew (10pm) is under review
The regional president of the Comunidad Valenciana, Ximo Puig, has confirmed that, on May 9, when the state of alarm in Spain is lifted, the perimetral closure of the region of Valencia will also be lifted after several months of strict travel restrictions.
Sr. Puig has confirmed that he is not considering any other kind of local or provincial perimetral restrictions at this time, as the pandemic data has been favourable in the past few weeks in the region of Valencia.
Although the situation has improved recently in the region, the president has issued a reminder that the virus is still present and there continue to be daily deaths and around 250 patients hospitalized with Covid.
He has also stated that the curfew is currently under being reviewed while taking into account the recent epidemiological reports. The 10 pm curfew will either be maintained at the same time or pushed back, but it will not be any earlier than 10 pm.
Across the country there is significant uncertainty about how each of the individual regions will respond to the lifting of the state of emergency. Although the regional governments have mechanisms which will enable them to impose and enforce some restrictions at regional level, the regional governments are still calling for the national government to pass more restrictive legislation which will permit them to impose and enforce more stringent measures than will be available to them from May 9 onwards under the existing constitutional legislation.
There are mixed feelings about the removal of perimeter borders; as of Monday evening (May 3) the Comunidad Valenciana has an accumulated incidence rate over 14 days of 42 cases per 100,000; in Madrid the level is 368 cases per 100,000, raising fears that residents from Madrid flocking to their holiday apartments on the coast, will greatly increase the possibility of coming in to contact with covid in areas such as the Valencia region, once freedom of movement within Spain resumes.
At the moment neighbouring Murcia has still not decided whether it will re-open its own borders, so although residents of Alicante province may technically be allowed to leave Alicante, they may not be permitted to enter Murcia just yet; the Murcian regional president will confirm the situation later in the week.
