Polish murder suspect arrested in Alicante
The fugitive faces 25 years behind bars after being picked up by Orihuela police
The National Police in Orihuela have captured a highly dangerous Polish murder suspect who was the subject of a European Arrest and Surrender Order. The fugitive is a member of a criminal gang dedicated to cross-border smuggling and is wanted for his part in an armed conflict near the border with the Czech Republic and Germany, known locally as the ‘War of the Spirits’, in the '90s.
Once deported, he faces 25 years in prison in Poland if convicted.
As part of a recent operation by the Central Bureau of Investigation of Poland (CBSP), the body of a man who disappeared in 1997 was discovered with obvious gunshot wounds and officers zeroed in on two main suspects.
The pair immediately fled and the "Shadowhunters", a CBSP group specialized in locating fugitives, went on the hunt.
One of the suspects was tracked down in the Masovian Voivodeship in Warsaw while the other escaped to Alicante province, where he was eventually located by the Fugitive Tracing Section of the National Police in a house in Orihuela, where he reportedly lived with his partner.
Realising the Spanish police were after him, the fugitive again went on the run just a few hours before officers arrived at his door but the team lay in wait and he was arrested the moment he returned home. It’s understood the man had crossed the border between Poland and Germany before returning to Spain.
Various items of documentation, cash and three mobile devices were seized.
