Belgian rapist arrested in Benidorm by the Spanish authorities
The suspect was convicted of five counts of rape after abusing his adopted daughter when she was 16
The national Spanish police have arrested a 56-year-old Belgian man in Benidorm, Alicante, after a European arrest warrant was issued by the authorities of his country.
Agents from the Spanish police were notified of the possible presence of the fugitive on the Spanish coast in the famed tourist town. Once located in a hotel, the police launched an operation to capture and arrest the suspect.
The man who was apprehend was suppose to be serving a sentence for five rape offences against his adopted daughter. The sexual assaults were committed between the years 1999 and 2001.
The crimes took place in the United Kingdom after the family moved there. Once caught, the man was sentenced to nine years in prison. He managed to escape prison when granted temporary leave and took the opportunity to go on the run.
Many question why a rapist would have been granted temporary leave and therefore place the blame of the fugitive running free on the authorities and the prison laws they imposed.
At the time of running from prison the rapist still had 2,095 days left to serve. Following his arrest, he has been placed at the disposal of the Central Courts of Instruction of the National Court, which will process his handover to the Belgian authorities.
