Alicante weather alert escalated to extreme risk
A red weather warning will remain in place in Alicante province until 9pm Wednesday July 19
All of Spain is in the middle of its most punishing heatwave of the year and Alicante province is now gearing up for its warmest day of the summer so far on Wednesday July 19. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has just activated its maximum red warning for extreme risk temperatures along the entire southern coast between the hours of 1pm and 9pm.
Western towns on the south coast will bear the brunt with temperatures that could reach a smothering 42ºC although the entire area won’t fall below 39ºC.
The most at-risk regions are the Vega Baja, Baix Vinalopó, Medio Vinalopó, Alicante and Marina Baixa.
An orange weather alert, representing significant risk, remains in place for Alto Vinalopó and l'Alcoià, where the mercury is set to tip 36 and 40ºC, respectively, while a yellow warning has been issued in Marina Alta and El Comtat.
Tuesday July 18 is proving little better and red warnings for extremely high temperatures have been established for the following communities:
- Vega Baja: Albatera, Bigastro, Callosa de Segura, Cox, Jacarilla, Orihuela, Redován, San Isidro.
- El Comtat: Agres, Alcocer de Planes, Alfafara, Almudaina, Balones, Benasau, Beniarrés, Benilloba, Benillup, Benimarfull, Benimassot, Cocentaina, Gaianes, Gorga, l'Alqueria d'Asnar, l'Orxa, Millena, Muro de Alcoy, Planes, Quatretondeta.
- Medio Vinalopó: Pinoso, Elda, Monóvar, Petrer.
- L'Alcoià: Alcoy, Banyeres de Mariola, Benifallim, Castalla, Onil, Penàguila.
- Alto Vinalopó: Beneixama, Biar, Campo de Mirra, Cañada, Salinas, Sax, Villena.
- Marina Alta: la Vall d'Alcalà, Beniarbeig, Benidoleig, Castell de Castells, la Vall d'Ebo, la Vall de Gallinera, la Vall de Laguar, Murla, Orba, Parcent, Pego, Sanet y Negrals, Tormos, Xaló.
The following towns have been issued with an orange warning on Tuesday July 18:
- Vega Baja: Algorfa, Almoradí, Benejúzar, Benferri, Catral, Dolores, Granja de Rocamora, Pilar de la Horadada, Rafal, San Miguel de Salinas.
- Baix Vinalopó: Crevillent, Elche.
- El Comtat: Facheca, Tollos.
- Medio Vinalopó: Monforte del Cid, Algueña, La Romana, Novelda, Aspe, Hondón de las Nieves, Hondón de los Frailes.
- L'Alacantí: Agost, Alicante, Xixona, Sant Vicent del Raspeig.
- L'Alcoià: Ibi, Tibi.
- Marina Alta: Alcalalí, Benigembla, Benissa, Dénia, el Verger, Llíber, Ondara, Pedreguer, Sagra.
- Marina Baixa: Beniardá, Benifato, Benimantell, Confrides, el Castell de Guadalest.
