Corvera airport uncertainty continues
President Valcárcel insists that everything is going “very well”, while Aeromur protest at procedural irregularities in the rescission of their contract
Hardly a day seems to go by without conflicting statements being issued regarding the state of play at the as yet unopened Corvera airport, and yesterday was no exception.
On the one hand, regional president Ramón Luis Valcárcel reported to members of the press that the negotiations to close San Javier airport to passenger flights are going “very well”, and that an agreement to shut down the civil operations at the airport should be signed within about a fortnight.
But at the same time Aeromur, whose airport management contract at Corvera has been rescinded by the government, have lodged a complaint with the president of the Region of Murcia’s judiciary council asserting that they were left defenceless by the way in which the management contract was ended. Specifically, Aeromur claim that not all the documents regarding the government’s plans were made available to them, and that the regional ministry for Public Works also failed to notify them of all the procedures which were undertaken.
Due to the lack of documentation received, Aeromur claim that they were unable to understand fully the regional government’s point of view and thus deal with the situation fully armed.
On Friday the regional government minister for finance, Juan Bernal, insisted that the difficulties experienced in the process of ending the contract with Aeromur have not yet caused a major delay in the processes to open the airport with a new concessionary in place.
