ARCHIVED - Orihuela opens its first beach for dogs
In great news for dog owners, the Cala Cabo Peñas in Orihuela, also known as Cala Mosca II, is now officially a dog friendly beach.
Orihuela Costa on the Costa Blanca has 16 km of beaches which varies from rugged coastline to fine white sandy beaches, and pet owners have been calling for some time for a small section to be set aside for dogs.
In response, "a beach has been made available for the enjoyment and leisure of people accompanied by their pets".
A sign with images has been placed at the access to Cala Mosca II beach, listing all the rules and regulations in both Spanish and English.
The regulations state that any dog mess must be collected and placed in dog bins, and 'dangerous' dogs must wear a muzzle and be kept on a leash at all times.
In addition, dogs should have a European pet passport and be microchipped, and owners are asked to respect the local environment.
Dog-friendly beaches are becoming more and more popular on the Costa Blanca, and there are others located in Denia, Benissa, and Altea as well as Villajoyosa and El Campello.
The city of Alicante and the town of Santa Pola and Torrevieja also offer dog-friendly beaches, all of which are open all year round.
