Orihuela Costa locals join forces to organise the first ever Carnival
The new festival commission was launched in Playa Flamenca to promote local festivals throughout the year
Between Saint Patrick’s Day, the Irish match-making festival and the largest Christmas Day beach party in Europe, the Orihuela Costa is certainly known for its larger-than-life celebrations. But now, the region is making everything official with the creation of a brand new festival committee, launched this week in Playa Flamenca.
Up until now, parades and processions along the coast, which is home to more British and European expats than most regions of Spain, were largely dictated by the local government in Orihuela city. But with the creation of the Orihuela Costa Festival Commission, the celebrations the area has become world-renowned for will now have their own official calendar.
This will begin with the Costa’s dedicated Carnival parade on February 17, 2024, which actually took to the streets for the very first time in 2022 and was a roaring success.
Following the renowned St Paddy’s Day in Cabo Roig, which is one of the biggest in all of Europe, the commission has suggested a local celebration of the Orihuela Costa with a range of events between June 23 and 30, "with activities in all the neighbourhoods, thus seeking the involvement of all residents."
It doesn’t stop there, as the association wants to pack the calendar full of year-long events, continuing on October 31 with a special Halloween procession organised in conjunction with the La Florida Merchants Association and local residents of Las Filipinas.
At the moment, the plan is to close out the festival calendar with the famous La Zenia beach party on Christmas Day.
“Likewise, the calendar is not closed to possible future parties. The idea of the festival commission arose from the need to establish and consolidate festivals on the coast, which is so needed. This is how a group of neighbours and members of other associations decided to start with this project and thus provide more leisure options to locals,” a spokesperson from the Cabo Roig and Lomas neighbourhood group explained.
