ARCHIVED - Biggest matchmaking festival in Europe is headed to Alicante
Ireland's Lisdoonvarna eight-day singles event is being held abroad for the first time and will take place in Cabo Roig, Orihuela
Veteran matchmaker Willie Daly promises love will "definitely be in the air" in Alicante as he brings Ireland's world famous Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival to the Costa Blanca, the first time the long-running singles event has been held overseas.
The annual County Clare-based lovefest was cancelled earlier this year, for the second year running, due to Covid, and typically attracts thousands of people looking for love from around the world.
So the 79-year-old father-of-eight is bringing his Cupid-skills, along with his 150-year-old "love ledger", to Spain to conjure romance in Alicante.
The self-proclaimed love doctor and Ireland’s most famous matchmaker says his passion is to help hopeful singles, of all ages and nationalities, find a life partner and have a lot of fun on the way.
Since he started out as a matchmaker 50 years ago, following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, Willie has set up around 3,000 marriages.
The festival would normally take place over six weeks in the spa town of Lisdoonvarna, and whilst scaled-back events will still be held in Ireland, Willie and two of his daughters were invited to Cabo Roig to help spread the love, and so "Lisdoonvarna is heading to Spain for the first time".
He told IrishCentral that he's not quite sure what to expect, but imagines "the Spanish fellas, with their Latin blood, will be a bit more forward than the Irish lads.", who "tend to be shy, and only get going once they've a rake of pints inside them."
Singles events will be held in a dozens of venues in Cabo Roig from October 19 to 26, including the aptly-named Irish bar the Randy Leprechaun.

On its Facebook site, Lisdoonvarna 2021 at Sunny Cabo Roig, organisers wrote: "Hopefully everything will go to plan. Willie the Matchmaker is on his way from the famous town of Lisdoonvarna to make a few matches here on the Costa Blanca. Looking forward to seeing you all."
And, according to matchmaker Willie, inquiries have been pouring in from around the world, particularly following the release of the rom-flick 'As Luck Would Have It' earlier this year, a film based loosely on the centuries-old singles festival.
He said "the movie's certainly helped" generate interest, and added that the timing is perfect, "as there's a lot more people looking for love out there because there wasn't any opportunity for romance when the pandemic was at its worst".
